Zumba, Yoga, & Kickboxing – OH MY!

Why oh why is the beautiful weather never here to stay? After a rainy start to the weekend, Sundays blue skies were a welcome invitation to finally come out of the cocoon I’d been hiding in. Instead of spending the day indoors, I packed a bag and quickly drove down to Quincy beach to catch a few hours of sunshine.


It was picture perfect – and great while it lasted.

Monday morning my blue skies had turned gray. Instead of moping around the house (and eating 1287538 pretzel crisps because I finally went grocery shopping for the first time in a month), I went to my new gym. That’s right, last week I cancelled my membership to GymIt in Boston and splurged by joining a slightly more expensive, but more convenient gym.

Listen, we all know I’m not a fitness feign and I rarely share my workouts (probably because I rarely workout at all…) but this week has been a week of firsts so we might as well just keep it on going!

Guys – I love my gym. I’m really starting to get what it’s like to enjoy going to the gym. I’ve gone to the gym 5 days in a row (this has gotta be a record [[for me]]) and I don’t plan on stopping!


Let’s rewind a bit.

GymIt was an awesome gym. Great machines, great people, modern and new – however it just wasn’t working for me. I had to drive to the gym each day and always worry about whether I’d find a parking spot later that night near my building. AKA this allowed me to use “parking” as an excuse to not go to the gym.

The initial appeal of my new gym is the fact that it’s less than a 5 minute walk away from my apartment. Although it’s definitely more expensive than the $20/month I was previously paying, the perks make the cost worth it – HANDS DOWN. I can walk to the gym whenever I want and there’s no excuses keeping me FROM the gym. In fact, it has been raining 4 out of the 5 days and I still went to the gym, soaking wet and all! #progress

However, as great as the location of the gym is, I would say the number one seller for me is the classes they offer daily. SOLD. GymIt didn’t offer any classes to it’s members, and while that worked for me for a few months – I realized I need someone there pushing me, motivating me, and keeping me guessing. In the past 5 days I’ve tried 5 different classes and have loved every minute of it. Four out of those five classes I’d never done before in my life and look at me now!

Let’s start with Zumba. Holy hell, my little 50 year old instructor was an explosion of energy. From the moment she walked in the door I was smiling, her enthusiasm was infectious! I was a little lost in the beginning, this being my first Zumba class, but I loved how easily you could catch onto the dance moves! Before I knew it I was breaking it down to Macklemore’s “Can’t Hold Us”. I had a BLAST!

(Hatha & Rock ‘n Flow) Yoga were my first yoga classes EVER. I had no idea what to expect. I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the class. Worried that my (lack of) flexibility would hold me back. Shy because I felt like I was the only person who hadn’t been there before.

Within moments, all my worries were washed away. Although I had two different instructors, both were amazing, helpful, and encouraging. As I left the studio room after each class, I felt so utterly peaceful. I am head over heels in love with yoga, and the feeling of closeness I have to my spirituality while doing it.


Now onto my personal favorite, Kickboxing. Again, another first. I loved everything about this class from the people in it, to the instructor, to the layout of the class. It was fast paced, it was tough, and it was fun. There is nothing like kicking the crap out of an inanimate object, especially after a rough day 😉

Finally, onto Spinning which happens to be the only class I’ve tried in the past and the only one I didn’t really like. Moving on from the fact that I couldn’t sit down for days because my butt was in pain thanks to those incredibly tiny seats (<— hello run on sentence), I just wasn’t feeling it. I didn’t feel the music, I didn’t like the flow, and I wasn’t a fan of the repetition workouts. I like someone who keeps me on my toes and pushes me, but knows when to give us a cool down. Luckily there are 2-3 other trainers who teach the same class, so maybe I just haven’t found that connection that I did with the other instructors.

All in all, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I finally enjoy going to the gym, and honestly, slowly I see improvement on the outside. My legs are becoming more defined, and OH HEY my upper arms DO have muscles!

But the most important thing is the way I feel inside. I feel comfortable in my own skin. I feel like I can take on the world. I feel happy.


And any gym that can make me feel this way is the gym for me :)

    So happy you love your gym and all the classes! I love taking yoga and kick boxing classes. I actually used to be a member of LA Boxing and that was a KILLER work out. But it was a drive and like you I am a queen of excuses. Plus traffic in the DC area is ridiculous so while it should have taken me 5 minutes to get there it was 20 minutes in bumper to bumper, NO THANK YOU. Way to go girlie!

      Seriously, the fact that I can walk to my gym has made a HUGE difference. My excuses literally vanished out of thin air – and now with the classes, I actually enjoy going!
