To Pack or Not to Pack…

…THAT is the question! I have been going back and forth debating on what I do and don’t need for my trip to Europe. It’s hard trying to fit three weeks worth of clothes into one suitcase (that cannot exceed 44 lbs :( Thanks Contiki!). Something I definitely MUST avoid doing is overpacking.

To Overpack – (v.) To pack too many items in a pack or suitcase for a trip. See Sara.

I’m a textbook overpacker. I’m the type of person who needs to pack tons of unnecessary items of clothing, just so I have options when it comes to getting dressed. Because I’m going to be in Europe for three weeks (and I’m leaving in two days, YAY!), I’m going to have to re-wear many of my clothes. As frustrating as it’s going to be not having my entire wardrobe with me (which is a small price to pay ;)) my sister and I have had a blast accessorizing all of our different outfits to make them unique.

For the most part, Steph and I took some of our favorite dresses and used cardigans, jackets, scarves, and belts to accessorize each outfit! It was a quick and easy way to dress up/down our outfits so we can re-wear them :)

We also tried to find ways that we could turn day shirts into night outfits, that way all we had to do was a switch of the bottoms and we were ready for a fun night out! :)

Another great thing about having a sister is the ability to share clothes with each other πŸ˜€ Between the two of us I’m sure we’ll be set!

Now that we have all of our outfits set aside, all that’s left to do is pack it up! Wahoo! πŸ˜€

After finishing finalizing our outfits, our family got dressed up for my grandma’s 77th birthday. She’s seventy seven years young :) I hope that when I get older I’m half the woman she is! My mom always says she can’t believe how old grandma’s getting, and I agree. She’s so lively and active, that it’s hard for me to believe that she is what some may call a “senior citizen” (even though she’s forever young in my book πŸ˜‰ ). Every year that passes, she gets a little older and a little bit wiser. One of her favorite quotes to live by inspires me everyday…

“To live a long and happy life you should do three things: stimulate your mind, your body, and your heart. Stimulate your mind by exercising it daily. Form your own opinion, speak up for what you believe in, be aware of what’s going on in the world. Stimulate your body by working out, whether it be long walks or a four mile run. And most importantly, stimulate your heart by continuously strengthening your relationships with the ones you love, because love is the greatest of all things.” -My Grandma

She is one of the most amazing women I’ve ever met, and I’m so lucky to call her my grandma. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I love you G-ma :)

Today I’m off to do some birthday shopping for my mom. Her birthday is tomorrow and I can’t be more excited to surprise her with some great gifts before we head off to Europe! Have a wonderful Tuesday, and get excited for all of the guests posts that I’ll be posting while I’m gone! πŸ˜€

How do you pack for a long OR short trip?

What’s your favorite way to spend a birthday?

i’m with you, i always end up packing WAY more than i need and it’s a pain lugging my suitcases around when i travel…haha. but i’m always afraid i’ll leave something out and then desperately need it. i also pack lots of snacks and food stuff, that prolly doesn’t help keep my bags lighter.

that’s such a great quote from your grandma and glad you guys all were able to be there and share her birthday with her! my favorite memory with my grandma was when i was really little and we were watching Bambi at her cabin then all of a sudden this bat flew across the tv screen! a bat had gotten into the house and it started chasing us around…we were petrified at the time but laughed like crazy after. :)

I went to Europe for a month…in winter no less…and had no problem getting everything into one suitcase. Here are a few suggestions: don’t bring more then a week’s worth of clothes. I know…right… Bring a weeks worth of clothing, and bring powdered detergent. Wash clothes in the sink if needed in early afternoon/evening, and let them air dry over night. Might not be ideal, but it is very doable. Bring a pair of tennis shoes for walking, one pair of flip flops/sandals, and maybe on pair of heels. Bring a change of clothes, all meds, and snacks on a carry on for the plane. Instead of packing all your hair products, put them into small bottles (even if checking luggage!) so it takes up less space. While we love bring make up for all sorts of occasions, pack the necessities (1 eye shadow, mascara, eye liner, etc…). This will again take up a small amount of space. Make sure to bring clothes that you can layer. While it may be hot during the day, if you’re walking around a city at night, it can get chilly (a lot of the cities are filled with stone, and thus get colder then, say, a night out by FSU). Bring clothes that work with many outfits, not just with one specific outfit. And those are a few suggestions…

i’m not sure if you are staying in hostels as that is what I did when I backpacked throughout Europe. I highly recommend bringing your own towel…hostels won’t supply them and it’s nice to know you are the only one using your towel. Bed Bath and Beyond has some great “space saver options” for towels. Also you will need comfortable shoes and good socks!! you will walk soo much. An extra memory card is a good idea too in case you take tons of pictures, I went through two 2 gig ones when I was there 3 years ago. Pack allergy meds, even if you don’t have them, people react differently to different areas and some of my friends were so miserable with allergies overseas.

please let me know if you need any other suggestions. i was gone 2 months, it was the craziest yet best trip of my life. tweet me or whatever. and of course, get so excited!!!

I am so much better at shopping for short trips but long trips is a whole other story! I love spending time with my family and friends and of course eating yummy foods and watching a movie on my birthday! I have so many memories with my gramma it is hard to pick a favorite! I know one of the good ones is having a day full of shopping and having a wonderful lunch a a tea shop! I love our one on one time!
